Power Zones for Ironman Training

Question: what power zones/levels should I be targeting during my Ironman training?

Rich Strauss: The power training world speaks the power language described by Coggan and Allen in “Training with Power,” the WKO+ software, etc. This is based on Functional Threshold Power (FTP), or your average watts for a 60′ time trial effort. Training and racing zones are then prescribed as a percentage/fraction of this power.

In my experience, the zones described in the book above and in WKO aren’t very descriptive and are too broad. This is how we work the issue with our athletes. Below are percentages of FTP.

… well DUH.

but to elaborate on that – a SPECIFIC kind of work works.   What the hell does that mean?  Ok, up in here in Vancouver, it’s not exactly “ideal” weather to be riding outside (albeit it’s been one of the best winters I can recall in terms of lack of  precipitation) so most of us have been relegated to sitting on a trainer from November to March.   I dunno about you, but the thought of spending anymore time than an hour on a trainer is asinine.

What I’ve been doing the last couple months during this “outseason” is high-intensity stuff and workouts that have a high return on investment in terms of amount of training time.  I’m currently at about 5 to 6 hours of training a week TOTAL including prep-time.  With the exception of one drive out to the Peak Centre for Human Performance for their winter race series each week, all my training is done within 10 steps of the front door  – strap on shoes, bang, I’m out the door for a run, or throw my leg over the bike on the trainer and I’m givin ‘er.

This is all part of the Endurance Nation way of training.

Time for some Intervals, baby!

Every year triathlon coaches begin to recycle the advice not to be a “winter” rockstar; someone who trains hard in the Winter only to peak and fade long before the season even starts. Instead of working out so hard these coaches suggest you begin laying the foundation for a great season by “training to train,” something that involves putting in many hours of “base” work on the trainer, treadmill and in the pool.

Unlike these coaches, we have spent the last three seasons being rockstars. In fact, we have worked to build a team of rockstars who emerge from their winter “pain caves” stronger and fitter than ever before…and proceed to have breakthrough seasons. We are here to tell you that these triathlon coaches are sadly mistaken in their approach, and that there’s a better way to train that makes you fitter & faster, takes up far less time during the dark, cold winter months, and will utterly transform you as a triathlete.
