Carbohydrate Loading

Carbohydrate loading is just one strategy which can be used to make sure you don’t bonk!  If you want to make sure that you can keep up with the pace throughout any endurance event, then you may want to consider using this method to give you that much needed energy boost.

The carbohydrate loading should start at least seven days before the event which you are taking part in. The first step is to use up all your energy through exercise – if you you’re already in the process of training to complete in an event this can be incorporated into your routine. Over the following days, you should aim to keep your carbohydrate intake to an absolute minimum. Not only does this mean that you should avoid snacking on things like chips and crisps during games of texas hold em poker or whilst watching a movie, but you should also avoid energy drinks, which you might ordinarily incorporate into your workout diet, as they tend to be high in sugars. Then, two or three days before the event which you are taking part in, you should alter your diet so that it is very high in carbohydrates, such as whole wheat pasta and grains.

The result of this process if that your muscles are able to absorb much more of the glycogen from the carbohydrates than they normally would. It is this glycogen which gives your body the energy to continue its activity. Having said this, large meals which are consumed shortly before a period of prolonged activity can sometimes have a detrimental effect on an athlete’s performance. In order to avoid this, there should be a enough time for large, carb-heavy, meals to be properly digested before competing in an endurance event. If this rule is followed, many find that Carbohydrate Loading can be an extremely effective dietary programme for those who wish to maximise muscle energy.
